“As in the day of Noah…”  If anyone recalls the story of Noah and the Ark, you remember the animals going into the ark two by two, and the rain and the floodwaters, the dove, and so on. But rarely do we hear the part of the story that prompted God to tap Noah on the shoulder to build the ark.

The bible says of that day, “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.” (Genesis 6: 5-6) Can you imagine God grieving?

So, we know the story, God decided to do away with mankind through the flood, but one man found grace with God and that was Noah. God chose Noah to preach righteousness for decades before the flood came and not one man, not one person repented. The only exceptions were the family of Noah. What must it have been like that no one headed the warning of God through Noah?

Picture the chaos of that day. The depravity. The heartache of God as He looked upon mankind and saw the sin, the violence and deception. The Bible says every thought of every heart was evil, constantly!

Then Jesus said in Luke 17: 26-27, “And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man (my emphasis): They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.”

God’s history with mankind is revealed plainly in scripture. Man, without God is evil, deceptive, and always selfish and self-seeking. When chaos comes, mankind will always revert to its most base self. Survival. And so it is in our day. So much anger and pain. So much frustration and fear. Man turning to man to solve our deepest problems. How can debased man help debased man?

And thus, the terror of our day. We look to men and systems created by men to heal our pain, right our wrongs, and bring justice. But no matter how much we shout, burn, protest, kill, and practice revenge and try to equalize the playing field of life, it is to no avail. Unless God is in the midst of it.

Many who walk with God believe we are living in the last of the last days of this age. I am among them. And even those who don’t walk with God see the corruption of things and can see we are in trouble. This understanding incites fear in some, redemptive joy in others. But in either case, the answer to man’s trouble is not anything of this world. It is Jesus, Himself. He said of Himself in John 14:6, “…I am the way and the truth and the life”. And again, in John 16:33, “…. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation (Emphasis mine), but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

The events of late show us who we are at our most primal level and should strike fear in our hearts. Not one of us is any better than the other no matter what our political or social affiliations. Fear is running rampant in our country because we are witnessing things that have never happened here and the airwaves are crowded with so much propaganda that it’s a wonder we haven’t destroyed ourselves by now. Galatians 5:15 MSG, “If you bite and ravage each other, watch out—in no time at all you will be annihilating each other, and where will your precious freedom be then?”

I apologize if I sound condemning or cynical. I’m not. I simply know the truth and if I remain in the truth, I will be free (John 8:32, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”)  The truth is a person, and His name is Jesus Christ. Outside of Him, there is no hope for life or country or people.
